obama to extend those policies as his team works out the bugs in the affordable care act. steve large is in sacramento. now, steve, california is not going to help the white house. and this could affect hundreds of thousands of people. >> reporter: well, "covered california" essentially voted to stay the course. they are not going to allow those who are facing their policies to be terminated january 1 any type of extension. there was a chance of a one- year extension. the vote was unanimously by the "covered california" board 5-0. and, of course, this comes as president obama has been facing backlash after telling americans they could keep their healthcare insurance if they wanted. it turns out that's not true. one of the critics of this vote today happened to be the state insurance commissioner dave jones who says that this is a disservice to policyholders. now, bottom line here, after this vote today, i can tell you that there are 900,000 californians who have received cancellation notices. some of those people will be able to get some type of subsidy to get them into a "covered cal

by tomorrow. the driest year ever. look for temperatures in the 50s and 60s. here's sal. >>> steve, good morning. we're looking at a commute that's just average. some areas are not doing well. but others are better. it's kind of averaging out into an okay commute. for example, if you look at 880 here, it's looking pretty good near the coliseum heading up to downtown oakland. when you get to the bay bridge, we don't have a super-huge backup. it's backed up for a little bit. the 880 ramps are the best way to get there, especially if you have fastrack, you will be able to bypass a lot of that traffic. 580, that's a different story. 580 in livermore has been slow the entire way from the altamont pass all the way through. we had a crash on 680. that has traffic backed up into san ramon, heading south towards pleasanton. it gets better if you are on the road after pleasanton. but the traffic is not that bad on 680 and fremont. 101 southbound near belmont we've had a series of collisions. 7:03. back to the desk. >>> all right. thank you, sal. >>> police in santa rosa are asking for the public's

driving on the highway. we're live in illinois with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: steve, good morning to you. as you mentioned, at least six people are dead. dozens more are injured. it still remains unclear with much of the power out, many roads unpassable how many are injured and if that death toll will rise. here in manhattan, illinois, an assembly of god church was hit by an ef-2 tornado while the entire congregation was inside trapping them there until rescuers could come in. miraculously only minor injuries were there. the worst damage appears to be in washington outside of peoria. the ef4 storm hit with winds between 100 and 200 miles an hour. we're told it cleared a path about an eighth of a mile wide from one side of the city to the other. search and rescue operations underway there. about more than 200 homes were completely leveled is what we're told. the illinois national guard sent theirs to assist with the search and rescue operations. as the sun comes up in a few hours they will get a better idea of how extensive this damage was across the state as well as the re

're offering up. so guess what else is going up? to steve at reagan national airport. steve? >> reporter: it's a formula for passenger frustration. you have fewer flights, more passengers, and higher fares. now, of course, holiday travelers face a lot of hassles. the weather is one of them. you can often have flight delays and difficulties like that, your flight is canceled. but a bigger concern might be the hefty price of those tickets, especially on the flights that are most in demand. now, there's good and bad news on this price front. the good news is, prices are not going up as fast as they were in the past couple of years. the bad news is, they are still going up. so take a look at this graphic put together be farecompare.com. now, that shows that in 2013, prices went up nearly 2%, 1.9%. but compare that with 2011, when we really hit the peak. that's when prices spiked at 4.4% over the previous year. so prices are going up, but the increase has slowed down somewhat. now, here's rick seeny of farecompare to summarize this situation. >> the bottom line is, prices are up, pretty dramatica

it wants to go higher. microsoft posted a significant markdown, and ceo steve balmer is retiring. that move wouldn't be happening at all and it's another case of a gigantic buyback just like merck and mcdonald's. how about walmart? recall, it turns out to be a fantastic buying opportunity and you're up a couple of bucks if you bought it with last week's weakness. i don't even care. what matters is that the stock is higher after a panned quarter. no one like the visa quarter, either except the buyers who had the incredibly well-run secular winner of the company that is still rung with the revolution. the six-point decline was a terrific entry point as visa now is only two points below where it reported and i sense they'll take that price out, too. chevron missed and quickly dropped three points in what looked to be less healthy paradoxing growth and not as exxon and not so hot refining margins and the stock is nicely above where they were, we have to be thank of the for the pullback. remember the woe is me goldman sachs quarter? the stock's now up 12 points from the 158 level that used the d

-owned entity, and sadly, it has struggled since. part of the problem, steve, is that congress does not look at transportation as a single entity. it looks at it in a stove pipe fashion in that aviation, amtrak, highways, are dealt with separate bills in separate budgets. the traveler does not say i am exclusively a railroad traveler. a traveler on any day might use highways, aviation, railroads, and what would certainly help america's transportation situation today would be to fund all of the modes to a multimodal, single transportation budget, which is not being done. what we are doing today is lobbyists from each of the modes are coming to capitol hill and fighting for their share of the pie. because amtrak is relatively poor, does not have a political action committee, it does not fare as well as the other modes do on the hill. host: i want to come back to that in a moment, but let's look at amtrak by the numbers. on any given day it operates 300 passenger trains daily. it has more than 21,000 miles of roots. it connects more than 500 destinations in 46 states, washington, d.c., and thre
